Season Update 2021

SPICY CHILLY

Moving into this season Spicy will be taking the same fearless attitude towards both training and competitions. Over the last two seasons, the foundations have been laid for what is to come, moving into this third iteration of Spicy Chilly. Competitive drive, personal determination, and the pursuit to better both the individual and the cohort will be three of the prime principles this year, whilst capitalising on the supportive and enjoyable attitude Spicy has been known to have. Season 2021 will see Spicy continue their upwards trend competing deeper into the division one nationals campaign this year, and will see us continue to foster a team environment we hope everyone wants to be a part of!

Coaches

Jasper Pentland - Head Coach

Jasper.png

Having coached the last two iterations of the Victorian u22’s Women’s team, Jasper is keen to spread his ultimate knowledge and develop the next wave of elite talent coming through Victoria’s ranks. Last season saw Jasper take on the role of co-coaching Spicy, enamouring him to the team, the players, and the culture. This season Jasper is moving into the role of head coach- something he believes he is prepared for and a role he believes he will be well suited to. With experienced ultimate campaigner Louisa supporting him in the coaching structure, Jasper believes the step forward Spicy will make this year will be more of a leap.

Similar to last year, this year Spicy will continue to push players to develop their personal skill set, whilst working towards a team-oriented program that will see Spicy continue the climb up the ranks in Australian ultimate.

With a background in Psychology and social dynamics, Jasper describes his coaching approach as laidback, whilst grounded in rational, logical thinking that allows for easily understood communication to best develop players as individuals and individuals as a team off field and on.

Louisa Battista - Assistant Coach

Despite being new to Chilly, Louisa could be considered a veteran on the ultimate scene. Having played two international campaigns and coached three national youth campaigns from her hometown of Adelaide, she brings a thoughtful and motivated approach to the team. Inspired by the energy and workmanship of the 2020 season, Louisa hopes her coaching will support Jasper in building a strong, dynamic and competitive team.

With a background in personal training and education, Louisa encourages a holistic approach to the season. She’ll be expecting the hard work and commitment from players that she expects of herself but also recognises that you can’t have a good day every day.

“We work hard for the things we love and if we didn’t love ultimate then we wouldn’t be here. I want to cultivate continued love for the game, the team, the club, and for ourselves.”

HOT CHILLY

After taking out the first Australia-wide tournament in 2020, Hot Chilly enters this year with tremendous self-belief and the expectation that they can match it with the best our country has to offer. Following the successes of the last year, Josh de Bell returns to the coaching ranks and will be joined by long-time clubman Victor Pupko to lead the team this season. The pairing will ensure Hot can build on gains realised in 2020 and receive the fresh insight and direction required to continue its impressive trajectory. There will be plenty on offer for new and returning players alike.

Josh de Bell - Assistant Coach

Although he would never admit it, Josh is well and truly a club veteran. Having played with Hot Chilly for eight consecutive years, we are excited for him to return as coach and continue leading the club’s emerging batch of young players. Colloquially known as ‘JdB’, Josh has represented Victoria, Australia, Chilly, and the Melbourne Flames in national and international level competition.

With a strong work ethic and a propensity to buy his player’s lunch when offering feedback, we are looking forward to seeing Josh demonstrate his dedicated approach to training and respect for the sport, teammates and opponents in a coaching capacity.

In his own words;

“I was so impressed with the effort from last year’s team, I couldn’t help but want to go around again as a coach. After a shortened season, it feels like we have unfinished business in 2021. Coming back with a bit more experience and a few lessons learned, I am not taking the opportunity for granted and am excited by the prospect of leading the club’s next generation of talent.

This season is going to be a bit different which gives us the license to get a little creative with our preparation and game-style. It is going to be a challenge to adjust to the new ‘COVID normal’ but we are excited to get stuck in and lead a team which is seeking to be the best in the country and support the broader Chilly family in developing younger players, building skills, fostering a thriving club environment.

I do not really have a frisbee philosophy but (when forced to write something) I’d say it is something along the lines of; “you work hard on- and off-the-field, you win together, and you enjoy yourself doing it”. For all those reading, I’d encourage you to come down to Chilly tryouts and chat with current players about the exciting opportunities available for season 2021.

Looking forward to seeing everyone there!

Peace.”

Victor Pupko - Head Coach

Victor has been involved with Chilly for eight years and is excited to be coaching Hot Chilly as they push to finish #1. With experience leading teams and supporting development through his seemingly endless stint at Melbourne University where he was forged in the fires of ‘Just dump the disc to Huy’ Ultimate, Victor is raring at the chance to use that experience to bring a new edge to Hot.

With the desire to strengthen Hot’s growth under the tutelage of Josh De Boss, Victor is seeking to ensure that players have the opportunity to elevate their individual skills and that the team can build on the supportive, competitive and exciting culture that has been established over the past few seasons.

FRESH CHILLY

Fresh is looking to build on the fun culture from last season and develop players to compete at the next level.  We’re really excited to see what the team can do this year driven by a lot of young talent.

With a mix of new coaches and chilly legends in support, there’s a broad range of skills to learn from.

Skills-driven training will allow individuals to capitalise on their natural athletic capabilities. Athletes chosen for Fresh Chilly will be pushed by their peers and as a group to realise their potential on the ultimate field. Fresh Chilly will look to build on the work ethic and camaraderie established in previous seasons, preparing players to push towards making Rep teams and advancing their ultimate careers.

Coaches

Kevin Noble – Head Coach Fresh Chilly

Kevin’s passion for ultimate started in high school, learning throws and trick shots from his freestyling hippy maths teacher.  He’s been playing and coaching developing teams for 20 years, in England, Scotland and Aus.  After a fun 2018 season playing Division 2 nationals with Fresh, he’s back from injury and ready to coach.

“I’m motivated by helping players learn a new skill, perfect a cut or increase their throwing range.  My team ethos is ‘enable your mates’ – every team member needs to get involved, have confidence in their receivers, have solid throws and know when to swing or put it long”.

A keen beach ultimate player, don’t be surprised if there’s a sand pod thrown in the mix.

Guest coaches throughout the season will include; Ollie Forster, Al Don and other Chilly ‘household’ names

Other Playing Opportunities

Chilly will be looking to providing a platform for developing players to train and scrimmage weekly. Details regarding this initiative are yet to be finalised. More information will be provided after team selections.
